No amount of botox disguises age when you have tight hip flexors. That challenge visibly impacts your mobility and flexibility. Probably more important is the impact of hip flexors on your golf. Our good fortune with the weather continues. Golf remains active at LGC. And with the warm temps sticking around through the weekend, why not take a break from raking leaves and get in a round of golf? As many of you may know, Patriot Golf Day will once again be conducted over Labor Day weekend, August 30 – September 2, 2024. Patriot Golf Day is the flagship fundraiser for the Folds of Honor Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides postsecondary educational scholarships for the children and spouses of military men and women disabled or killed while serving our great nation, and for spouses and children of fallen or disabled first responders. On Labor Day weekend, golfers across the country are asked to add an extra dollar to their greens fees to fund Folds of Honor scholarships. 91% of donated funds go directly to scholarships! The Patriot Golf Day campaign is jointly supported by The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association.
It has been a quiet event week at LGC. As August starts to turn to September and we see summer days disappear from the calendar, remember, once we get through construction projects and the aeration schedule, late summer and early fall will offer up some of the best golfing weather and course conditions of the entire season. So be sure to take advantage! Take a look at our latest newsletter to read more: https://online.retailtribe.com/Client/OnlineEditor/EMV.aspx?n=6974545&r=3526
With the August golfing calendar cleared of all events to accommodate the ongoing golf course work, there is little to report. All the club news has involved the construction progress on Holes #4 and #5, as well as last week’s tree removal. Despite the disruption, the member response to the changes they are seeing has been very positive. It will be great when all the work is complete, and we are all enjoying the “new look” LGC!
On Sunday, July 28th, 47 golfers teed it up for "the cause". Thanks to the tournament participants and the extremely generous donations received from members, the event raised $7,805 for the club's scholarship fund. I wish to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who participated in or donated to this year’s fundraising effort! Each year, the club awards scholarships to a Lexington High School golf team member, qualifying employees, and competitive junior golfers at the club. Our annual fundraiser for the LGC Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Memorial Scholarship Pro-Am Bramble, will be played on Sunday, July 28th. You have the option to play in the 7:30 am shotgun or in the 12:30 pm shotgun.
Note: This will probably be your last chance to play L.G.C. before the changes coming to holes #4 and #5!
On day 1, the course was, as they say, gettable. With calm conditions and receptive greens, the scoring was low. In fact, 23 of the 30 teams playing, broke par in the best-ball format of round 1. The Men’s 2-Day Member-Guest Tournament was played last Friday and Saturday. We had a field of 48 players in 4 flights enjoying 2 great days of competitive match play golf, each team trying to win their respective flight and qualify for the play-off to become the Overall Champions.
This event is scored in 2 formats. All teams are scored using the Callaway handicap system. Callaway scoring is used for net scoring when players do not have official handicaps. We also score best ball (gross & net) for those teams that do have handicaps. Take a look at our newsletter to read more: https://online.retailtribe.com/Client/OnlineEditor/EMV.aspx?n=6974535&r=3526
The weather was spectacular last weekend for the Seniors Championship. Once again, two-time defending champion Mark Bianco was the one to beat as he opened with a 70 in round one. He was joined atop the leaderboard by last year’s runner-up, Jim Magliozzi. Mel Carreras was another shot back after a round of 71. In round 2, Mark fell off the pace on the front 9 and could not recover on the back.
Memorial Day weekend, it is the unofficial start of summer. As we all enjoy a nice long weekend, don’t forget to take a moment (or more) in remembrance and honor of the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. Military . . . the true meaning of Memorial Day!
The Spring FourBall continued this week with 4 teams advancing to the semi-final matches. Both semi-final matches are scheduled to be played this weekend.
The Spring FourBall continued this week with 2 teams advancing to the semi-finals. Both matches were very close. In the first match, Peter Chamberlain and Jim Buckley edged out TJ Lombardini and Steve Jepsen, 2015 Champions, 1up. In the second match, Jack Pawloski and Tommy Benjes closed out Steve Keegan and Chris Murphy on the 17th hole winning 2&1. The other semi-finalists will be determined this weekend. The year’s first “Major” tournament is in the books. Last weekend we played the Paul Revere Cup. With early morning showers on Saturday, and cool (cold really!) breezy weather on Sunday, scoring conditions were tough. In fact, only 2 players managed to break par, and only 4 others matched it. Despite the tough conditions, Matt Tiano Sr. managed to shoot his career-low score at LGC. His net score of 67 was just enough to edge out Jim Magliozzi (68) by a single stroke and win the 2024 Paul Revere Cup. Scott Ettenhofer, Bob Nardella, and Peter Moran, and Steve Jepsen all shot 71 to share 3rd place.
As the calendar turns towards May, the tournament schedule starts to heat up. Hopefully we can get the weather to do the same! Stubbornly cool temps and a persistent wind have made spring golf this year a bit of a challenge. We all know that the good weather is coming, and it’s just a matter of time, but sooner would be much preferred than later!
